Barfly Goes Gay (Again)
Barfly’s “the Loft” space will be home to the Twin Cities newest gay night. An 18 and up night called “Pulse” starts on Saturday, August 5th according to their myspace page (warning: overbuilt myspace page). Barfly unsuccessfully attempted to court the gay dollar over a year ago, which makes this second try curious. This follows a trend in recent years of downtown clubs hosting unsuccessful gay nights. Currently, Karma is hosting “Krave” whose success has dwindled since beginning in March. Last year, Fahrenheit attempted a Wednesday night gay men’s night. The Minneapolis Cafe has also tried its hand at a Wednesday gay night with little success. I’ve also heard that Tropix tried a gay night a few years back. Does anyone remember any others?
The trend also follows a few unsuccessful gay bar openings. In 2003, Empire opened on 1st Ave near 3rd St. It closed pretty quickly thereafter. In late 2004, in the same space, another gay bar, Euphoria, opened. It didn’t last more than a year before converting to its current format as a hiphop club.
With 5 gay clubs/bars (3 are mega-gay-bar complexes) in downtown, we seem to have quite a bit of nightlife in downtown Minneapolis for gay men. Lesbians in this city don’t have squat, unfortunately. I guess the question is: does downtown Minneapolis need more gay night life?

Wait. What about the 90’s? Yeah, just kidding.
Minneapolis absolutely needs more gay night life! I’m just blank when it comes to ideas.
They’re calling it Pulse? Are they unaware of the local newspaper of the same name?
Hey, I’m going to start a theme-night at a bar and call it City Pages!
“Lesbians in this city don’t have squat, unfortunately.”
That seems to be the case in a lot of LGBT issues… oh wait, they got downgraded here too: GLBT.
Some people and I were discussing the drastic need to convert Williams in Uptown to the next gay hot spot. It’d be perfect, too, with the location and all the neon.
Heh. “Some people.” It’s all right, Taylor, you can call me out on my guerilla (gay-rilla?) tactics. I still think we can make this dream a reality. Who’s with me?
I’m in! Since I’m a lesbian and I have nowhere else to go.
Back in the ’90s, when the Minneapolis Cafe was located where Chino Latino is now, they had a pretty successful Wednesday night gay night, but I think that had a lot to do with the 1.95 Long Islands.
