‘80 at the Hexagon: Transmission
Jake Rudh’s Transmission is my favorite ‘hump day’ dance night. The great mix of ‘80 new wave, cutting edge electro, brit pop, and lot’s of David Bowie has had me following Transmission around the city over the past few years from Sursumcorda to the Imperial Room to it’s current spot at the Hexagon.
There are some serious ’80s fans who dress the part, a large gay following (even an occasional drag queen!), and all kinds of hipsters. I’ve made many new friends there and run into folks I hadn’t seen in years. The music is always different, with theme nights like “Hair Band Night.” I don’t think I’ve ever rocked out so hard to Journey. Jake does plenty of release party giveaways, occasionally has local live bands do a few songs, and plays retro music videos along to the tunes. He also takes requests! And trust me, he’s got it.
The Hexagon is a great old bar. According to Rose who has been there for 20 years (most of us affectionately refer to her as ‘grandma’), the Hexagon dates back to 1934. Each Wednesday from 10 pm to close, groups of friends sit and sip $2 drafts at the hexagonal tables that dominate the space. And Rose can sense your empty cup before you can. She’s there with another in no time. If you’re looking for a great mid-week ’80s night, Transmission at the Hexagon is excellent.

I went to The Hexagon for the first time a week or so ago and loved it. 75 cent pool tables and a cash only bar? Right on! That’s my kind of place.
