A Wicked experience
Wicked at the Orpheum was…well…wonderful! My one complaint about the show was that they picked the Orpheum in which to perform it. The State would’ve been better. The Ordway would’ve been perfect. The Orpheum, though, is TINY. And this is a big show. With a lot of staging. Everything was a lot more crowded on the stage.
I know that seeing a Broadway show touring here is different than seeing it on Broadway, but just the physical requirements should’ve said to the producers, “Hey, we need a big theater for this.” The sound was a little iffy, too, and had I not seen it before, I probably would’ve missed a number of the good lines. Still, I really enjoyed it, and I recommend trying to get in the lottery for the main floor seats. Next time, I’m in Chicago, I might have to put that on the list of things to do.
There must be quite a bit of competition between theaters for the various shows coming to town. At least between the Ordway and the Hennepin Theater Trust. Bidding wars and all that, special contracts through Ticketbastard, and all, but in my naivete, I’d like to think that sometimes the art might win out, and putting on a high calibre performance would look at the space rather than the bucks.
