Wicked Wednesday!
Tomorrow night, I’m going to see the opening night performance of Wicked at the Orpheum Theater. To tease me just a little, I saw the semi pulling up to the theater, with the Wicked artwork on the side. The production has a very extensive staging, so I can see that they’d need to haul a lot of stuff.
Tickets sold out quickly, but there’s still hope for those who are desperate to see the show. For each performance, there’s a lottery of 20 main floor seats, for 25 bucks apiece, cash only. 2 hours before the curtain goes up, the theater takes names for a lottery, and 90 minutes before curtain, they start drawing names. Each person drawn can buy up to 2 tickets, again for the 25 dollar price, cash on the barrelhead.
I’m not sure how I feel about lotteries as opposed to regular rush tickets. I remember once wanting to get rush tickets for Rent, when it first came, and I discovered that, not being a high school theater student with nothing better to do than wait in line for 24 hours, I couldn’t get rush tickets. I was willing to wait for a couple of hours, but for that show (the first time it ran in St Paul), you had to wait overnight.
On the other hand, I do think that there is a certain merit to be willing to stand in line for hours to get that “Golden Ticket”, which the lottery system has done away with.

You’re lucky to have gotten tickets. I know a lot of people that got shut out.
I would’ve liked to go, except that it costs a huge amount of cash and the Orpheum has the most uncomfortable seats I’ve ever sat in. Either I’ve got unnaturally long femurs, or no one over 5-foot-5 could be comfortable there. (I feel very bad for my 6-foot-4 fiance who had to sit through a concert there.)
I’m DYING to go. I knew it was coming this summer, but I hadn’t checked dates. I just saw the banners up the other day.
I plan on waiting it out a few nights to see if I can get in. I’m not sure if I will, but I can always hope. I am glad they have done away with standing in line for rush tickets. That way, busy people like me can sign up a few hours before the show and still have a chance of getting in.
