A Dearth of Bike Parking

Since we’re all about the bicycling lately.

Ken Avidor posted at TC Daily Planet about his disappointment at the lack of bike parking on the Greenway in the vicinity of the Midtown Exchange. Which is a perfectly legitimate complaint.

I’ve never seen so many bikes there as there are in his pictures, but I have seen a few dubious securings of bikes at the back of the Sheraton. In fact, every time I run by, I think about how nice it would be to bike over to get something to eat and I’m kind of confused every time by where exactly I’d put the bike and how to get around to the front. It’s probably not hard to figure out, but it would be nice if there were some signage.

It all surprises me in light of the fact that 1) there are so many plans for development and neighborhood integration on the Greenway, 2) there’s decent bike parking in other parts of town, and 3) the TC is supposed to be so bike friendly.

Bike Friendly, Twincities? Sure it’s relatively good, but it’s far from perfect. And that’s just when you’re in the city ;)

I live near uptown and I’m always amazed at how few businesses have places to store bikes. The ones that do, have these ancient bike racks from world war II or something.

I’d consider myself a bike-commuter since I usually opt for using it when I go to work or other places, I’m very glad that Minneapolis is lax about chaining up bikes to signs, otherwise I’d be forced to ride a crappy bike and free-lock it.
