Minneapolis City Council Passes Instant Runoff Voting
A couple weeks ago. Minvolved explains:
This means that Minneapolis voters will get to decide in November whether to adopt Instant Runoff Voting for future city elections. If approved, IRV would first be used for the council elections in
20072009 elections - unless a special election comes earlier.
So this would just be for city elections. The City Council approval means the proposal goes to the Charter Commission for evaluation and a decision. If the Commission suggests an alternative to the proposal, it comes back to City Council. It passed City Council with an 11-1 vote, so I feel pretty good about the chances of seeing it on the ballot.
This all has to happen at the local level before we can see it at the state and national levels. I’m excited to see some change happening. I’m also looking forward to feeling more confident that my vote will have an impact.
