The Highland Chatterbox

Wow. Had breakfast at the Chatterbox, in its brand-spankin’-new Highland Park location, and it was deeeee-licious.

It’s located where the Perkins used to be on Cleveland Ave. and Ford Pkwy. in St. Paul, so it’s easy to find. The parking around there is a bit of chore, unfortunately. Luckily, at 10:00 this morning, it wasn’t too busy, though. This location is much more spacious than the Minneapolis location, but they’ve re-created the atmophere and the food perfectly.

They have an extensive menu of breakfast, appetizers, sandwiches, and dinners, as well as drinks galore (including the savory Young’s Double Chocolate Stout!). I wish they had a website. I’m going off of a menu someone stuck on my car window during Grand Ole Day. (Click on the picture above for a bigger view.)

I had their cinnamon french toast this morning with a side of peppered bacon and eggs. My breakfast-mate had the stuffed french toast with sausage. Both versions of french toast were delectable and served with what seemed to be a maple-flavored whipped cream and Plugra-style butter. The stuffed french toast is stuffed with cranberry-flavored cream cheese. Yum!

The booths and tables were wide and spacious, apparently to accommodate any game-playing you want to do. They famously have a giant collection of board games as well as Atari, original Nintendo, and Sega Genesis games (Sonic the Hedgehog!). They had an eclectic array of ’70s style couches down the middle of the main room, complete with modern flat-screen TVs. Heh. A bit of an anomaly. But the service was terrific and so was the food and the atmosphere.

Highly recommended! Definitely check out the new location, but don’t forget about the Minneapolis location either! Located in Midtown on East 35th Street, it’s just as delightful.

Whee! I live in Southeast, so I’m equidistant from both Chatterbox locations. Yay!

Wait, so does the STP Chatterbox have a different menu? I’ve never eaten breakfast at the MPLS Chatterbox, and now I really want to, but I’m wondering if I need to go all the way to STP to get this french toast you speak of.

You should come all the way over to STP just to hang out and join us on our Bataan Death March walks on the weekends.

According to their menu, breakfast is served every day at the St. Paul location, including Sunday brunch, but the Minneapolis location only offers the Sunday brunch. But that brunch sounds heavenly. $9.95 for your choice of:
    — all-you-can-eat baby back ribs
    — spinach and artichoke eggs
    — buttermilk biscuits and gravy
    — denver eggs
    — roasted red bell pepper potatoes
    — cinnamon french toast
    — beer sausage and bacon
    — premium granola topped with vanilla yogurt or milk
    — fresh fruit and croissants
    (Some selections vary each week.)

Well, hell, I guess I’ll have to truck my ass over to STP on a Saturday or something.
