Get Over!
A friend of mine got a ticket the other day. He got pulled over, had no idea why he had been stopped, and said as much to the cop.
So, we all know that it’s polite and safe to get into the left lane if you’re passing by a car on the side of the road. Particularly if there are people standing around it, or if it’s a cop pulled up behind someone. Especially if it’s a cop pulled up behind someone.
This used to just be a courtesy, but apparently, as of a couple months ago, it’s now the law. It’s a moving violation to not get over if a cop has someone pulled over on the side of the road. And a $120 ticket.
My friend is going to fight it. I’m not sure pleading ignorance of the law is sufficient. But he’s going to argue that he was actually unable to get over safely. He was sitting at a light, and there were cars in both lanes of traffic. The cop was parked just beyond the intersection.
It sounds to me like it was a set up. He said several other people got pulled over, and all by cops other than the one that had been stopped in the first place.
So, yeah. Make sure you get over.
