Sharing is cool…

I had the opportunity to try out the new Hourcar service available in the Twin Cities. This is a service where for a small fee, you get to borrow a car that is shared with the rest of the people signed up for the program. There are a fleet of Priuses placed in about 17 locations around the metro area. Right now, I am pretty sure they are all in Minneapolis.

Basically, what you do is go in for an orientation. Then you can choose a plan of a monthly fee or by use charge. Then you reserve ahead of time a time you would like to use the car. You then go pick it up and drive it around and have it back before your time is up. Hourcar pays for gas, upkeep, and even insurance. I’m not 100% on all of the details, so go to the website and check it out. We used it for ComedySportz to do an “Away Show” for a client. We all pilled into it with our gear and drove to Lakeville. It was pretty neat.

I am thinking that I won’t have a use for it personally, but for the folks who don’t want to own a car and need one occationally, this may be a great thing. I’m convinced. They seem to be working in other parts of the world. Does anyone else have this in there city that can talk about it?

I think about that all the time because one of those Priuses (Prii?) is parked at the Uptown YWCA.

A friend of mine lives in Brooklyn and is a Zipcar member and she loves it. The time I visited her and got to ride in her rental Prius (named “Prudence”) convinced me to buy one for myself. I love watching the little display that shows you whether the electric motor or the gas engine is running.
