H-D + Mickey’s = OTP

So I was waiting for my oil change to finish up today, and I was leafing through one of the magazines on the counter, and I saw a print ad for Harley-Davidson. But what caught my eye was not the beautiful motorcycle, but rather Mickey’s Diner on 7th Street in the background! I’ve been looking for an online representation of the ad, but I haven’t found one. Anyone else seen this ad? Too bad there was no mention of the location in the ad. Although, I guess Mickey’s is one of our more well-known claims to fame. Still, it was cool to see it featured in an ad in a national magazine.

Just this weekend I caught a feature on Mickey’s Dining Car in St. Paul on some show on the Food Network. It was a good 5 minute segment and showed many shots of customers, food and the servers. Although I love the place, the “chef” had his hand wrapped in a huge ACE bandage like a burn victim and was touching all the food. I was kind of grossed out.

Harley Davidson has been ramping up their ad campaigns because they are losing their deathgrip on the motorcycle market. Their clientele is aging and the younger bikers (like me) aren’t interested in their high pricepoint product.

I think I’ve seen that ad before, and had to smirk, because it’s not really known as a biker hangout… but H-D made the ad look all retro by using it. I chalked it up to yet another style-over-substance H-D approach.
