Instant Runoff Voting in Minnesota

The Minneapolis Better Ballot Campaign is pushing to bring IRV ’round hyeah.

In a nutshell, with IRV you rank your candidates in order of preference. If no one candidate gets over 50%, the last ranked candidate is knocked out of the race. All of the ballots that listed that last place candidate as #1 now have their #2 votes counted. The votes are re-tallied and the process repeats until one candidate gets to 50%.

There are no primaries. Candidates and the government spend less because there’s only one election. And, supposedly, it promotes more issue-based campaigns. You have no more Nader stealing votes from Gore (okay, fine, or Perot stealing votes from Bush).

If you think IRV is a Good Thing, visit the Minneapolis Better Ballot Campaign website to voice your opinion.
