The State of Hockey
So last night I went to the Minnesota Wild vs. Colorado Avalanche hockey game. I picked up some tickets a coworker wasn’t using way back in September. Last night along with 18,000 other hockey lovers, we got to see the Wild put on a really sad game.
Being born and raised here, I have hockey in my blood. I wasn’t lucky enough to have girl’s hockey when I was a kid, so I took stats for my High School hockey team and even won a letter in hockey for it. So, I know a bit about the game, and the playing I saw from the Wild didn’t impress me.
They seemed tired and sloppy after the first five minutes. Speed wasn’t there, stickhandling shaky and passing was haphazard. It’s like their hearts weren’t in it. At the end of the first period, it was 3-0 in Colorado’s favor. Ouch. The final score was 4-2, after two more penalty-filled periods.
The season ticket holding fans seemed completely blind to the penalties committed by the Wild players, booing loudly whenever there was a call against them. Perhaps it makes me a bad “fan” but there was some really obvious violations happening - and they were called correctly.
Oh, and there was a textbook example of “Minnesota Nice” when we came to take our seats. I asked a middle-aged woman and her adult daughter nicely to please let us past them so we could get to our seats. Our seats were the only empty ones between her and another couple. “I don’t believe it!” she gasps, giving us a glare. Once we were seated, she made sure to sit down with an empty seat between us. Lovely.
