Crappy Stripmall Chinese Food and Gas Below $2.00!
Last night we pulled a coupon from the Happenings book, hoping to find a decent Chinese restaurant near our house. While the food itself was the same crappy stripmall Chinese cuisine that any of several hundred places in the TC make, the night was redeemed by seeing a gas sign displaying a price of $1.99. That’s less than $2 for those who don’t recognize a gas price without a “2″ in front. Who would have thought that 2 months ago? So, if your tank is low, get over to Robbinsdale and fill up (though we saw lots of $2.03 elsewhere).
And, if anyone knows where I can get decent Chinese in the Brooklyn Center/Fridley, Brooklyn Park, Crystal, etc. area, let me know. I want dishes where you can actually taste the difference between beef and pork, where there isn’t an oil slick on top of 25 different red sauces that all taste the same, where vanilla pudding from a can isn’t considered “dessert”, where MSG and cornstarch don’t outweight the meat, vegetables and rice, please let me know. We used to really enjoy Szechuan Star in Edina and Fotune House in Roseville, but aren’t particularly close to either any more.

Can’t help you with the Chinese food, but I did also see $1.99 gas at a Holiday in Golden Valley. On the south frontage road of 394, between Louisiana Ave and General Mills Blvd.
Good Chinese in Brooklyn Park (at least we think so)

There’s a place in a strip mall in Golden Valley (okay, a little farther away, but worth it) on General Mills Blvd, right off of 394 and 169. I forget the name, but it’s awesome, at least if you ask for the Chinese menu (don’t worry, some of it’s in English). None of that Americanized Chinese garbage! (Though I admit to liking it, as gross as it can be.)
Which place in Robbinsdale did you try? I’ve lived in Robbinsdale for five months now and have not yet sampled any of its Chinese food. Can you believe how many Chinese/Thai restaurants are in a two-block area?
I have to agree on China Star, Boone & 63rd. Great food; go during lunch if you can, huge portions for around $5.
I concur with P. Crissman (a friend), China Star in BP is really good. Tons of good food for cheap!
