Blimp 9 News Attacks Gophers

If you watched the Simpsons, Family Guy or any other Fox programming last night, you surely saw the teaser ads for this groundbreaking story right here:

We shot undercover video of 5 underage Gophers hockey players drinking at a popular Dinkytown establishment.

Sources tell us Blarney Pub and Grill is a popular hangout for the hockey team, and that in the year since the bar has opened underage players have repeatedly been served alcohol.

Ack! The lead-in was something like, “First it was the Vikings embroiled in controversy, and now it’s the MN Gopher Hockey Team who are making headlines.” But wait, neither metro daily has covered the story. Can you hear the THUD of the blimp as it hits the pavement? Talk about creating news for news sake.

NOTE: I found the undercover footage very intriguing. Wonder which intern they sent? Was it a U of M intern? Are they welcome at any of the games now? Sucks to be him/her.

I saw that story last night, and throughout the whole thing, I thought, “They spent two months investigating undercover for THIS? Now that is some crack journalism! I smell Pulitzer!” I am shocked, shocked I tell you to find out there is gambling going on here….uh, sorry wrong movie. I mean, I am shocked, SHOCKED, to find out there is underage drinking going on at the U.

I saw this story too and was appalled. They tried to make a big deal out of underage drinking. For christ’s sake do they think these are the only NCAA athlete’s who are underage and drink alcohol? I really think it was poor journalism to single-out the hockey team individuals by name and make it thier leading story. I understand that they are breaking the law and NCAA rules, but it happens EVERYWHERE.

    “Blimp 9 News” — Heh.

This can’t be the first time this story has been done. Next thing you know they’ll be reporting on underage drinking at frat parties… again….

When I saw that teaser, I thought, this better be something good, not something like underage drinking. Nope, not so much. And WTF??? Shouldn’t we do an undercover story on someone else’s sports team and not our own? Or at least do it on a sports team no one cares about? I gotta think more people are pissed off about this than thankful. I for one will not watch that damn channel again. Thanks alot channel 9, may you die of gonorhea and rot in hell.

I am in total agreement with both sides on this. They really didn’t need to single out the players on TV and call them out by name. It would have been in better taste to point out this was happening and then let the university make there own invesigation.

On the other hand, I completely agree with most of the posters here. It happens everywhere. Are people really that thick to think it doesn’t? Now these poor kids are more than likely going to be expelled and the rest of the underage drinkers are gonna keep right on drinking. Not a very good idea…

I am shocked! People actually drink before they turn 21?? Next thing, you’ll try to tell me that Channel 9 plans to advertise using a big ugly blimp!

These players need to be suspended and the bar should be closed. Who didn’t drink when they were underage & in college, BUT I wasn’t depending on other people to pay my tuition. These players were dumb enough to be caught and now they should pay the price. The bar is a greasy place that provides (and still does as of 11/9, I know someone who was served last night). CLOSE THAT SHIT HOLE!
