Friday night Thai
I went to St Paul Friday night for the monthly trip to Trikkx for their bear night, which was packed as usual. We wanted to get a bite to eat beforehand, and I thought I’d be able to do a quick review of the new Fuji Ya that opened up there, replacing a sushi place that was already there. I guess it must be popular, because the wait was such that we moved on. Actually, the wait wasn’t that bad, only 30 minutes, but more than we wanted to wait.
On Jeff’s recommendation, we walked around the corner to Ruam Mit Thai Cafe, and am I glad we did. It has to be one of the best Thai places I’ve been to in a long time. I think I had the Pad Mee, which was wonderful. The place isn’t very big, but it has a nice atmosphere, it’s clean, the food is great, and the service was very good. Jeff had told us going in that the food was great, but the service was lousy. However, we did get great service, and Jeff admitted that he had only been there during the lunch hour. I’ll have to go again soon, and try the pad thai, pretty much my standard Thai dish. I have been branching out though, lately, trying different things as it’s recommended to me. I haven’t quite gotten the bravery to go too far afield on my own, though.

Funny you should mention Ruam Mit…I was just there before the Paul McCartney show last Wednesday. I love it there–it’s not too fancy with great food. Been there many times.
But Wednesday night was one of the worst service experiences I’ve ever had in my life. I waited at the front for about 5 minutes for a table. None of the staff paid any attention to me. Luckily, I was early for meeting my friends.
I finally got a table and got no waitress for 10 minutes. Finally, I got some water. I ordered a Diet Coke. Nothing came. 20 minutes passed. My friends arrived. Three waitresses went by more than once, but none of them paid any attention to us. Other people came in and got served by these other waitresses. Mine was MIA.
Basically everything took at least 10 minutes too long. It took 40 mintues for my Diet Coke to arrive. She never brought my friend’s egg rolls. I had to leave before the bill could be paid because the line was so long. My friends waited 20 minutes to pay the bill and when they finally got to the register it took another 5 for the waitress to figure out how to take the egg rolls off the bill.
Absolutely ridiculous.
However–the food was still some of the best Thai food in the Twin Cities. Maybe someone had called in sick, but the worst part was that other people were getting a *bit* more attention than us. It was just awful.
And that’s my story.
