More movie mumblings…
So, last weekend I watched two films. The first was Mirrormask at the Lagoon (The sweet spot of showtimes seems to be the 12:10 matinee on Saturdays at the Lagoon. There were barely a dozen people in the audience. Apparently all the Neil Gaiman fans like to sleep in.), the second was Pi: Faith in Chaos that I had on hand from Netflix. I can’t imagine two more different films to consume in a short span of time.
Mirrormask is a colorful and fanciful story, while Pi (shot in black and white) is consumed with mathematics, computing, number theory. Yet, both are stories of discovery, with a bit of faith mixed in for good measure.
As much as I like the filmgoing experience at a theater, I really enjoy being able to watch a film, then rewatch key scenes to enjoy and examine them all over again. I think I’ll need to see Mirrormask again for this reason.

Saturday matinee, eh? I do want to see Mirrormask. Maybe I’ll catch that this weekend.
I also have Pi in my “to watch” pile of DVDs at home.
Did you have sound problems when you saw MirrorMask, or any trouble understanding what the actors were saying? Not because of accents, but because of the music overpowering them?
Nate and I had a real tough time understanding many key parts of it.
There was sound weirdness during the opening trailers, but I didn’t note any sound issues in the feature. I was able to hear the actors.
I’m pretty much a straight matinee movie guy. It’s the only way I can tolerate going to the theater. After all, the 14 year old kids who run in and out 5-6 times during the movie wouldn’t be caught dead in a 1:00 show with us old folks.
I liked Pi, but don’t bother with the sequel. They had more budget, but no new ideas and got rid of some of the more interesting ones. THe net result is a formulaic horror movie of the USA network movie kind.
