Fall drives…

I’m noticing that the leaves around the city are finally starting to turn color en masse. I assume it happens later in the city due to it generally being warmer here than out in the ‘burbs. I’m taking a trip down to my parents’ house in Prior Lake today, and I’m hoping I get to see some good color on the way, but I’m thinking it all may be over out there.

When I was a kid, my family and I would pick a Sunday, usually the second weekend in October, to drive down to Hastings or Red Wing or Northfield or over to Wisconsin just to see the fall colors. We’d make a whole day of it, stopping at an orchard, some little hole in the wall for lunch, and then on the way back, we’d stop and pick pumpkins. (For a list of locations to stop and do such things, as well as support Minnesota farmers, you can visit http://www.mda.state.mn.us/mngrown/default.htm.)

We haven’t done that in years, though. So I was thinking of places I could drive or walk to myself in the city that are full of trees and would therefore be pretty colorful right about now. I know Summit Avenue in St. Paul has a lot of trees and they’re starting to turn. I walk by them every day. But are there any other pockets of trees changing elsewhere in the city? I’m thinking maybe Cedar Avenue in South Minneapolis might be good. Perhaps by Lake Calhoun or Harriet or Lake of the Isles? Or what about Minnehaha Park or the Arboretum? We need to take advantage of this fine, fine weather while we got it. Any and all suggestions welcome. And go outside, people!

Mississippi River gorge from the U down to Ft. Snelling is good on bike or foot. Take the lower path on the East side that runs from the U of M’s flats downriver, climb out of the gorge when you hit St. Paul, and cross on Lake St. 46th to do the rest on the west side of the river.

Or down in Hidden Falls Park, continuing through Crosby Farm Park in St. Paul. That’ll take you from Ford Parkway to 35E. Lots of good views.

Wow, thanks for those ideas. Hopefully the viewing will still be good by next weekend.
