Make and Take

I gotta say, this is the best thing I’ve ever heard of.

I hate to cook. Hate it. But I love to eat. Eating out, especially eating good food, can get pretty expensive, and I don’t have that kind of cash flow. But I know how to turn the stove on, so make and take seems perfect. There are at least a couple of places in town — Simply to the Table and Sociale Gourmet — that offer make and take service.

The deal is you sign up for a session, pick entrees from their menu, and then you show up at their kitchen and assemble all the (pre-chopped, portioned, etc.) ingredients yourself. You throw ‘em in the cooler you brought with you and take them home and freeze them until you’re ready to cook them.

In most sessions you’re making meals that serve 4-6 people, but both places have an option to make meals for 2-3 people. I was investigating the 2-person option, and you can make 8 or 9 meals for two for $90-$100 bucks. That’s pretty damn good. Better food for less per serving than I’d spend at Chipotle or Jimmy John’s.

Both places offer private parties. At Sociale Gourmet you can pay extra to just buy the food, pre-assembled.

Has anyone tried any of these places?

I haven’t, but I remember hearing about them before. It seems like a good idea for someone who’s not all about cooking. Most people who say they don’t like to cook, just don’t like prep work and these places handle most of that for you. Pretty good idea. Seems ridiculously cheap, too.

I’ve been to Let’s Dish in Eden Prairie - I went with a few girlfriends and we prepared about 7 meals. It was expensive, but great - I DO love to cook, but life gets busy and it was nice to have pre-made meals in the freezer for the nights that I couldn’t quite get it together to make dinner.

Wow!! I had no idea these types of places were here. I should check them out. I actually don’t mind cooking, but often don’t just because I have better things to do. This would be a better option than eating out all the time, that’s for sure.

I’ve been to both the Dinner Dr. and Let’s Dish and the Dinner Dr. has by far better menu selections and packaging. Also, the owner there seemed to really wanted me to enjoy myself while I was there and really made me feel at home. Also, the dinners I made went into these great pans - not baggies like Let’s Dish. Dinner Dr. gets my vote!
