How silly…
I have to wonder if the new speed limit thing our wonderful city is trying will be effective at all? If you haven’t heard, they are raising the speed limit to 60 in a few stretches of highway around town. Then, they will be cracking down on people who go even a little bit above the limit. I foresee many problems with this. Don’t they have to wait until you are going four miles faster than the limit before they can catch you? I think it has something to do with the accuracy of the instruments or something. People are just going to complain, it will bring more headaches, they will drop the strict enforcing, and people will be able to go 60 still. Why don’t they just up the speed limit to say, 70. Then if people speed over that, we pull them over. No one really needs to get anywhere faster than 70. Am I wrong?

Personally, I don’t understand why people cannot drive the speed limit in the first place. It exists for a reason, and it’s not for the arbitrary whims of police officers and public officials. What I hate most about speeding (and reckless driving in general) is not only that it puts the driver and his/her passengers in danger, but it puts every single other person on the road in danger. The potential fatality of an accident increases severalfold with every increase in speed, and the ability to control a car and the time you have to react to danger DECREASES. It’s a recipe for disaster, but unfortunately, it seems that too many people fail to grow out of the “I am invincible” stage.
I say that you pull over EVERYONE who speeds, period. Hell, set up camera systems that slap a fine on people automatically. I certainly don’t mind, since I don’t speed, and I’d love to see the assholes who put MY life in danger get their licenses revoked.
I’m agree with Tipper for the most part. I’m as guillty as many people about going too fast when I’m running late or something. But, I don’t act indignant and pissy if I get nicked by the cops. If you don’t feel like you want a ticket, don’t speed. Simple. If you don’t speed, you won’t get a speeding ticket. Period.
btw - Nate, I don’t know if it’s official policy or anything, but a police friend of mine tells me that most cops have a pule of thumb when it comes to what speed they’ll pull people over for. The reason being that it’s very simple for people to argue the inaccurate instrument scenario with the court. Simply put, not worth the hassle when they’re spread as thin as they are already.
Way to edit, Jason.
Please ignore my complete disregard for the English language in my post above.
I maintain that the speed limit is just a suggestion. I guess I’m just impatient like that, and I have my fair share of speeding tickets to show for it. I don’t even argue or get indignant anymore if I get pulled over. But I’m not gonna sit and chill at 55 when highway traffic is light and I’ve got somewhere to be.
