Rule # 1: Always have two motorcycles.

I learned the invaluable lesson this summer of owning two motorcycles while in the midst of a bike project. I started tearing down my sportbike in January, and it’s taken from then until now to get it to the point of reassembly.

The longest part of the ordeal was getting my frame powdercoated (the photo is of the cat approving the work). I discovered all manner of weirdness about the frame when it was stripped for powdercoating, which required some extra repairs, and even rewelding one of the welds. Thankfully there are terrific welders out there who will still work for a case of beer.

So, this weekend I finally get my bike back together. My mechanic buddy is coming into town tonight, and tomorrow we start the whole assembly process. I spent all night last night cleaning parts and impressed myself with how well I labelled everything into separate baggies. Some of my notations are cryptic, but I soon recalled what I was thinking when I wrote “RT S.A. ADJ” - Right Swing Arm Adjuster.

There’s still things I would love to do to this bike while it’s in pieces, but I’ve gotten to the stage in the project where Done is better than Perfect.

I wish more people in general would do work for a case of beer. Like my mechanic, for instance. I really need a new muffler and can afford a case of beer. Man, that would be sweet…
