What’s the crime officer?

I was driving home from Southdale late last night were I just got done seeing War of the Worlds. Great movie, by the way, but that’s not what I need to talk about. I decided to take the back streets home and went up France and turned onto 50th heading East. About two blocks down, a cop car was blocking the road and forced me to turn right or left. I thought nothing of it and took a left and then a right down the next street. About five blocks down, the street forced me to turn right back towards 50th. I had to stop quickly because there was police line tape all the way across the road. I turned around and had to go all the way to Xerxes to get back on 50th. There was road flares and three cop cars at the intersection. They weren’t saying anything. I did notice some brouhaha about three blocks down, though. A bunch of cops were looking at something on the ground. They were completely blocking whatever it was.

I have looked on line for something about it and haven’t been successful. Does anyone know what happened? I am so curious!! I wonder if it was another body. Weird…

Star Gazing…

Unlike Erica, I am actually pretty stoked to have the filming of Prarie Home Companion happening. It is the biggest movie shot in Minnestoa to date. (No, Joe Somebody DOESN’T count.) I am hoping to go do a little star gazing next week. I might just pass out if I happened to see half the people involved with this film. It’s an acting geek’s dream come true!!

There was a picture of Linsay Lohan in the paper this morning. Um…I knwo I shouldn’t believe what the tabloids and E! TV tell me, but I did. I thought she was gonna be all skeletor-like. She is still a very attractive young woman. She isn’t as voluptous as she used to be, but she hasn’t gone the route of Mary-Kate, either.

So next week…who’s with me? I’m bringing a camera and some snacks and making a day of it…

The Prairie Home Companion Movie

I’m having a hard time getting excited over the concept of the Prairie Home Companion movie. The fact that Garrison Keillor wrote it himself is reassuring, but it seems so anti-PHC to make a movie out of it.

Maybe it’s more to do with the fact that I can’t decide if I love A Prairie Home Companion or hate it. I guess I like the idea of it. It helps me understand these deep-rooted Minnesota stereotypes a little better (I’m not a native Minnesotan). I can get with Garrison Keillor’s politics. But then sometimes the show bores me to tears.

So I won’t be hanging out around the Fitzgerald Theater hoping for glimpses of the seeming hordes of celebrities that are gonna be in this movie. Although if I were to see Maya Rudolph on the street, I’d probably pee my pants a little.

I’m Staying Out of the Lakes

For as much as I enjoy the lakes and spend hours upon hours running/walking/rollerblading around them, I’ve never even been close to thinking about sticking a toe in them.

Lake Calhoun currently has obscene levels of E. coli ’round about the 32nd Street beach. Given that there are dead bodies floating around in the lake, I don’t think I’d venture to the North or Thomas beaches either, even though they’re still open.

Lovely.

Local punk rockers the Soviettes officially release LPIII today. Here’s a video.

Feeling Naked…

I had a huge issue with my Time Warner/Roadrunner service this past weekend. We lost our Internet sometime between late Wednesday night and Thursday morning. I thought it had something to do with the enormous amount of heat that happened that evening. Many people lost power so I thought maybe, somehow, that could have affected our Internet service as well. We called and they said, indeed, they had many outages in the city. They said it would be running shortly. Thursday evening saw no internet…or did Friday morning. So we called again. They needed to send someone out to check on it…which couldn’t be accomplished until Monday, today. I was really pissed. I feel naked without my Internet.

So, today they turned up and literally five minutes later, they said it was ok now. Seems our wire was mis numbered. Someone canceled their Internet and that turned ours off. A stupid mistake that cost us our internet for five whole days. All I can say is they better reimburse us for the time.

Can you get Comcast in the city? It seems like it would be totally against monopoly laws to be the only company allowed to set up cable. I know that has happened in this city in the past, but I thought that was ending. I hate the whole politics of it anyway…

Virtual Realities

Most of us, by now, have figured out where in Minneapolis the single, like-minded people of our general age group reside, lounge or otherwise entertain themselves. It

Finding fine dining.

Last night I had a nice meal at Morton’s steak house downtown.

Morton’s is a chain of steak places; I first visited one in San Diego. The ambiance is quite similar in the Minneapolis version, and the steak was as good as I remember (very). Our service was a bit slow due to all the staff being distracted by a very large party in the private dining room. However, the wine selection is huge and the menu solid. Dessert was a Godiva chocolate cake a la mode.

I’ve been relying on word-of-mouth recommendations with an occasional visit to twincities.citysearch.com for some of their reviews. I’ve hit many of their “Fine Dining” listings over the past year or so and am running out of new options. What are other good resources for finding good eats in Minneapolis?
