Drainspotting…or, Art Underfoot
I’ve begun an art project that will include photography of some of the more interesting designs found on the lowly manhole covers in the streets of our fair Twin Cities.
Through my research for the project, I’ve discovered that I’m not the only one who finds the big round castings interesting. There seems to be an entire community of cover-lovers taking photos out there. Not strictly in the TC, mind you…but they’re out there.
Anyway, have you ever noticed any interesting manhole covers while popping around town? Yes? Let me know. No? Start looking down.

Mark Barsness is a local artist who did a series on manhole covers. His site (http://www.geocities.com/MARKBARSNESS2002/) has a collection of his paintings of manhole covers.
In years past, he exhibited his paintings at Art-A-Whirl. He also had a display at the Hennipen History Museum last year which was interesting and informative.
That sounds like an awesome idea. You will have to let us know how it is going on this site. I would love to see more pics:)
Didn’t you just get a new bike? Is there a connection, between your new interest in manhole covers and a new bike…
nope…no new bike. a new camera, perhaps. :)
I found a nice one in Foix/France:

Sorry, wrong Jason!
Square them up and you can also post them to the Flickr Squared Circle group.

A friend in Ypsilanti, MI, posted something recently about a Russian manhole cover project he’s participating in. It would appear that someone in Saint Paul is sending photos, but only one so far was taken in Minneapolis.

Hey guys, it’s the manhole cover painter. Thanks for checking out my website, Scott McGerik, after seeing my stuff at Art-A-Whirl. Keep in touch by phone too. And to Mister Jason, keep photographing manholes. I’d like to see more. BTW, the photo shown of the Mpls sailboat is one of the last canvases I painted as a commission! Will post more images of my artwork asap. Thanks for your interest. Mark
