Make the Old New Again…
I spent a little time at the Palace theater this weekend. Most people have never even heard of the place. It is located by Jimmy John’s and the Park Square theater in downtown St. Paul. It is home for only a little while longer to the Brave New Workshop’s dinner show. They have been doing the show in the lobby of the theater because the theater itself isn’t up to code. I had to take a peek inside the dorrs of the main theater. We were not allowed inside because we could get the theater in trouble. It is a beautiful theater!! I can’t believe no one is ponying up the dough to fix it up.
I did some research on it and found out that it was a HUGE part of St. Paul way back in the ’20s. The Marx Brothers did shows there. At one point in time they flooded and froze the stage so that an ice skater could perform. This much specticle reminded me of the Radio City Music Hall. It isn’t quite that large, but you get the idea.
I have heard the figure to remodel the place is a minimum of thirty million dollars. I would so like an investment company to come to the city and fix this place up. It makes me sad that a large theater is just sitting dormant in a city that could use a few more large theaters. So…I am putting out the word to anyone with ideas on how to start a fundraising project or what have you. I think we need to help save this historical site…
